Dear Coaches:

The Academic Team at the Early College at Guilford is pleased to invite your team to the 2010 Early College at Guilford (Quaker Bowl) Invitational, the second annual competition hosted by our club.  The Quaker Bowl is scheduled for February 6, 2010 at Guilford College.

This tournament will use NAQT questions from the "invitational" series and will serve as an unofficial NAQT event.  As such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship to be held May 28th-30thin Chicago, Illinois.  We are also looking to obtain sanction as a PACE event (last year's version of this tournament was listed as a "Gold" tournament using PACE guidelines).  We will use NAQT set IS-90.

Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions.  Players who first answer a question correctly will reward his/her team with 10 pts, and will give his/her team the opportunity to answer a set of bonus questions totaling 30 pts.  For the first time this year, bouncebacks will be allowed on the bonuses.  Questions come from the major academic categories (literature, science, history, fine arts, geography, mythology, religion, social science), in addition to popular culture, sports and general knowledge.  More information related to the tournament format will be announced in later correspondence as the tournament date approaches.

All other information about registration may be found on the registration form included with this communiqué, or on our post on the High School Quiz Bowl Forum:

Please fill out the online registration form available at the link below, or send your registration letter to the address listed in the header above.  Once registration is completed, a confirmation email containing official rules, directions to the tournament, parking and dining information (all of which will also be provided on the day of the competition) will be sent.  Registration fees may be sent by mail in advance with printed copy of the online registration form for a discount or paid at the tournament.  Checks should be made payable to "The Early College at Guilford." If you have any questions, concerns, or desire more information, feel free to contact me through e-mail at ecgquizbowl@gmail.com or by phone at 336/316-2860.

We look forward to hosting a competitive and rewarding tournament on February 6th, and hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

  Paul Smith--Tournament Director
