McLeansville Elementary Accelerated Reader (AR) Program

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading assessment program.   In this program, students read a book and then take a quiz on the computer.  The students earn points by answering quiz questions correctly.  Each book in the program is worth a set number of points based on the grade level of the book and the length of the material.  Points are stored by the computer in each child's individual account. 

Thanks to the McLeansville Elementary PTA, students can earn prizes and/or awards by earning points.   Prizes will be distributed throughout the year.  Special awards are given at our awards program at the end of the year.  At McLeansville we use AR as a purely motivational program that children participate in by choice.  We believe that AR can help promote enthusiasm for reading.  Grades are never assigned based on AR participation or scores.

If a child does not score well enough on a quiz they won't get points.   We want students to understand what they read.  When a child fails a quiz it is usually because the book was too hard for them, or they did not take time tounderstand the book.  If a student consistently fails quizzes, the teacher will work with them to choose other books or to increase their comprehension.  Once a child has taken a quiz, the computer blocks the child from re-taking that quiz.  This  encourages students to try their best and continue to look for new books to read.  Not all students are ready to take AR tests. Students in K-2 should continue to participate in the Bobby Bobcat Reading Program until their teacher feels they are ready to be successful at AR. 

Students may read books from home, their classroom, the public library, and the McLeansville School Library.  AR books from our library are marked by a green colored dot on the spine.   Please be aware that n ot every book in the school library is an Accelerated Reader book.     You may view AR lists on the McLeansville Elementary School  website or from any computer in our school.  You can choose to view the list sorted by author, book level, points, or title.  Please see Mrs. Medley with questions about the AR program.
