Answers
1)  Q What do we do?
A

Our goal is to help each student adjust personally and socially, achieve academically, and explore future academic/career interests through counseling, consultation and other services to students, parents, and staff.

Brief Individual Counseling . We help students explore their concerns, make appropriate plans of action and be successful in following through with their plans.

Mediation. Groups of two or more students may be referred because of interpersonal conflict.  We facilitate a problem-solving process among these students.

Crisis Intervention. We will provide assistance and support for students or staff members that are in immediate crisis, including, but not limited to: threat and/or signs of self-harm or suicide, signs and/or reports of abuse, death of close family member or friend, etc.

Conferences. Often parents will contact us to set up a meeting between parents, teachers and the student.  We will contact the teachers who will coordinate times and dates.

Schedule New Students. We place students based on academics needs and  class size.  Teachers receive notification via email or in writing of a student being placed in a class.  We try to provide advance notice if possible. Teachers should keep us updated regarding special class needs, behavioral issues, etc.

Classroom Guidance. A few times a year we will enter various classrooms and provide lessons on topics such as career development, course selection and registration, and possibly others, depending on needs and schedule.

Referral.   We serve as referral agents to help students and their families receive assistance from other programs and services in the school system and  community agencies.

Test Coordination. We coordinate testing throughout the year for the following assessments: EOG's, field tests, NC Extend 1 & 2,  Algebra I & II  EOC'S, PSAT (Algebra students) and possibly others.

Maintain Student Records. We request and send out records when students enroll and withdraw. We encourage teachers to review their students' records, as sometimes it holds information essential to better understanding a particular student.

2)  Q How do we operate?
A

We generally have an open-door policy; however, that open door is based upon the teacher's discretion and initial assessment of a student's needs.

We also make appointments with students, to promote responsibility. Teachers will always be aware of these appointments through an e-mail, phone call, a note in the student's planner or the student's appointment reminder slip.

Teachers may also refer students to us using the counseling referral slips or email.
