Welcome 6th Graders!!!!! This page is designed specifically to answer questions you may have and to give you information about band this year. If you are not sure about taking band in the 6th grade, look around the site and check back often for updates. It is better (and easier) to take band in 6th grade and move on to something else if its not for you than it is for you miss out in 6th grade and try to catch up in 7th grade.

Students may choose to play Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, or Trombone NO student will play drums in the 6th grade this year, instead ALL students will learn a wind instrument and drum parts will be assigned as needed. This will give everyone a chance to play drums, not just a select few.  Students do not need to have previous experience on an instrument, just the desire to learn the instrument they have chosen.  Students do not and probably should not rent or purchase an instrument over the summer.  You may wait until the start of this school year.

Music stores are available in our area that provide rental and purchase programs.  Mr. Henry recommends renting an instrument in the 6th grade.  You may visit the Rental and Repairs link for more information.

At NEMS we use the Standard of Excellence series of band method books.  ALL 6th graders should have their own book.  We will use Book 1, it will have a red cover.  All Students should have a pencil and a 3 ring binder everyday.

Private lesson teachers are available in our area to help give you an edge in the highly competetive musical climate of Guilford County Schools.  You may visit the Private Lessons link for more information.

You may contact Mr. Henry by calling NEMS at 375-2525 or by email him using the Email Mr. Henry link or directly at henryc@gcsnc.com.
