It has been proven in schools that the Standard Mode of Dress (SMOD) policies and guidelines have diminished peer pressure, eliminated competition in school dress and promoted school pride.  The dress code and appropriate dress guidelines will also promote student safety by eliminating clothing that expresses negative messages and obscenities and by eliminating clothing which exposes the chest, abdomen, private areas, legs, or buttocks.
 

A team of students, staff, and parents have put together guidelines for the students at Vandalia.  All students (except students in the Pre-K program) are required to adhere to the "Standard Mode of Dress."

Uniform Guidelines
Tops:
Royal Blue, Navy, White, Light Blue, Yellow,or Goldenrod
(short or long sleeves; may wear turtleneck or mock-turtleneck shirts without buttons; may be polo/golf style shirt)
 
Pants:
Navy or Khaki
Limited to no more than two front and two rear pockets
Cannot be tucked into socks
Capri pants:  Allowed but cannot be hip huggers
Form fitted spandex material, nylon, denim, corduroy, and sweat pants are not allowed.

Skorts, skirts, and shorts:
Navy or Khaki and worn at the knee cap level
Limited to no more than two front and two rear pockets
Splits or slits are not allowed

Sweater:
White or Navy
No heavy coats can be worn inside the classroom

Accessories:
No scarves, do-rags, headbands, hats, or bandanas
Socks & tights must be white, navy, or khaki

Belts:
Must wear a belt if garment/clothing was manufactured with belt loops
Belts or waist bands must be visible with shirts tucked in except when sweaters are worn
Suspenders are not permitted
Name buckles are not allowed

Shoes:
All shoes should be closed toes.  Flip flops/sandals are not permitted
Colors: Brown, black, white, or navy (solid shoe colors are preferred)
