GCMC Admissions Process and General Information

Greensboro College Middle College

Admissions Process

Applicants for the 2012-2013 School Year

  • Applicants submit an application by March 23rd.  Included with the application are a copy of the student's transcript and two letters of recommendation.
  • As applications come in they are given a folder where we check off the materials required (application, transcript, letters of recommendation).  Once a file is complete the transcript is screened to make sure the student has completed or is in the process of completing the following courses:
      • Biology
      • Civics and Economics
      • World History
      • English I and II
      • Algebra 1
      • Health/Physical Education
  • If a student has not met one or more of the prior course requirements the principal notes that on the front of the application and sends it to Student Assignment office. Student Assignment sends a letter to the family explaining they are not eligible at this time to attend GCMC due to course requirements.
  • If a student has met all the course requirements the family is contacted to schedule an interview.
  • Each student who qualifies based on the courses above is scheduled for an interview.  The interview is a two part process - the student first comes in and interviews with one or two teachers - this last approximately 20 minutes.  That student then comes down the hall and interviews for approximately 20 additional minutes with the principal and counselor.  The principal also meets with the parents during the interview process.
  • The principal then uses the teachers' recommendation along with the counselor and principal recommendation to determine if the student will be tentativelyaccepted to GCMC for the next school year.
  • The principal indicates the student's tentative acceptance or denial on the front of the application and submits this to Student Assignment who in turn sends a letter to the family.  If the student is tentatively accepted Student Assignment also sends a letter to the home school indicating the possible reassignment.
  • In June, once final grades have been posted, we will request documentation.  If the student has passed any of the required courses they were enrolled in, their status will be changed from tentative to accepted and a formal letter will be sent to the family and the home school to indicate they are officially accepted at GCMC for the 2012-2013 school year.
  • We accept approximately 60 rising junior students each school year.  Our 60 current juniors return each year and become our senior class.  There are times when we have a very few number of open seats for rising seniors.  We have a total student enrollment each fall of 120 students (60 juniors and 60 seniors).

Additional admission requirements include the agreement to complete:

  • First Year Seminar college course during the first semester of their junior year
  • Graduation Project
  • College Course work during their junior and senior year

Overview of a Greensboro College Middle College Student

Greensboro College Middle College is an academically challenging school that provides the nurturing environment necessary for student growth and success.  We offer a unique educational opportunity designed specifically for students who may not have performed to their full potential in the traditional high school.

The GCMC student is a capable individual who has become unsuccessful or dissatisfied in a traditional high school setting.  The student does not value the experiences and customs of traditional high school and/or does not fit well or perform well in the traditional high school setting.  The student possesses the maturity and independence to accept the challenges of this progressive school, is capable of honors level work and participating in college classes. The GCMC student is interested in being part of an intimate community of peers and faculty.

Greensboro College Middle College has the capacity to serve approximately 120 junior and seniors.  Our courses are taught at the honors level, but we have a limited course offering, so any student applying should have completed:

  1. English I & II
  2. Civics and Economics
  3. World History
  4. Biology
  5. Algebra I
  6. Health & PE

We have a full time EC teacher and accommodate Exceptional Children based on their IEP.

The typical GCMC student:

  1. Is disengaged from traditional high school:  The student does not value the experiences and customs of traditional high school and/or does not fit well into or perform well in the traditional high school setting.  Disengagement may be expressed through failing academic performance, poor attendance, a "different" appearance, lack of social connection with other students, a lack of a sense of belonging, and/or an expressed apprehension that the school size, culture, or any other dynamic of the traditional high school will have an adverse affect on his/her ability to continue successfully.
  2. Demonstrates a willingness to take responsibility for him/herself and the maturity to handle the freedoms of a college campus.
  3. May express a desire to drop out rather than to continue in traditional high school; but is willing to come to GCMC as an option to dropping out.
  4. Has, at some point in his/her school career, demonstrated the academic ability to handle honors level courses and college level course work.
  5. Has probably been impacted by a major life changing event/circumstance/crisis, i.e. divorce or loss of a loved one, (which he/she may be able to readily identify), that has distracted him/her to the degree that he/she finds it difficult to remain successfully engaged in traditional high school.

The typical GCMC student is not:

1.   A student with a historical trend of negative discipline referrals.

2.   A student who cannot handle the rigor of honors classes with support from his/her teachers.

The students describe themselves as:

· Friendly

· Embracing/tolerant of differences

· Open-minded

· Responsible because of the freedom of the college campus

  • Students will complete 1st year college courses as a junior and senior at GCMC.  Students who enter will have the opportunity to complete an entire 1st year of college and be prepared to enter college as a sophomore upon high school graduation.  A typical student's plan of study may resemble:

    • Fall Semester

      • First Year Seminar at Greensboro College
