Cultural Experience Day

LES VENDANGES: NWMS - November 2nd 2010

Grape harvest in France and all over Europe is happening right now (August through November). Weather looks like rain every day and for weeks. At this time of the year (usually October) schools are closed for 2 weeks. Culturally related to the grape Harvest because many students of all ages participate in the harvest. Many people, young or old, comes from other countries to do the harvest too. Some because of the money, some because of the atmosphere. For those who live far away, rooms and lunch is provided by the owner of each vineyards. You need to apply a year in advance in order to have a spot. Workers stays in the vineyard property for about 2 weeks and leave when the harvest is finish. All are paid the same amount per hour, some a little more depending on their experience. Usually it is about 14 to 20 USD/hour. This experience is unique. Many people working together more than 10 hours a day under the rain to pick up grapes. At dinner after a long day of work (sometimes more than 10 hours) everybody gathers together around tables, eating a bowl of warm soup. Everyone is happy that the day is over, some people bring their guitar or other instruments. At this time everybody celebrates the Harvest. The next day they have to wake up very early, they usually are in the vineyard when the sun rises in order to pick up as many grapes as possible during the day so the harvest can be done as quickly as possible.
We will celebrate in our classroom on TUESDAY November 2nd. For this we will have some grapes, grape juice, bread, cheese and walnuts. This is how, in France, we enjoy having a quick dinner at this time of the year. Please consider donating money and/or above mentioned products so the students can enjoy this special taste coming from France and Europe. Students will have a power point presentation about all what French people enjoy during Autumn.

Students need to make their parents sign the <Les vendanges> handout (due Monday November 1st).
