High School Ahead Walk for Breast Cancer
A wave of pink encircled the field at High School Ahead Academy on a cloudy October morning Wednesday. Students Tynesha and Tyneka Townsend and their sister, Sherrie Townsend, led the throng of about 100 of their peers and teachers as they began the 10-lap breast cancer awareness walk in honor of Sherrie, who is fighting Stage 3 breast cancer.
The walk was conceived as part of the school’s service learning project, says Principal Michelle Hayes, but students wanted to make the project more personal. So when twins Tynesha and Tyneka mentioned their older sister’s battle, Hayes was happy to help.
“We have students here who have aunts, grandmothers, great-aunts, great-grandmothers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” Hayes said. “We couldn’t service everybody, but we did want to service someone who was right here at High School Ahead Academy and make a direct impact.”
