| Descriptor Term: | BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE CONTROL | | Descriptor Code: | GBRAC-P | | Date Issued: | June 23, 1995 | | Revised: | February 1, 1997 |
| | | Because of concerns regarding exposure to infectious bodily fluids, staff members are directed to prohibit untrained students and other untrained persons on school grounds and at school events, from dealing with blood or other bodily fluids of other individuals. (Untrained persons who, contrary to this procedure, act on their own in an emergency or other situation, do so on their own and specifically assume all liability and responsibility for their actions which have not been authorized by the school district.) Student Trainers and students in designated occupational courses with health related components who, with written parental permission which must be on file, have taken the approved Bloodborne Pathogen training and received or formally declined hepatitis B vaccinations are exempt from this prohibition. Annually, each high school shall be allowed to send any such student trainers to the district sponsored training sessions at district expense; however, the hepatitis B vaccinations must be at the school's expense, or in the alternative, from some other funding source such as the health department, or at their request by parents and/or students who wish to pay their own health care provider. A two-hour district sponsored refresher course will also be available to continuing trainers each subsequent year at district expense. Students in designated vocational courses needing bloodborne pathogen training will have such training and vaccinations provided to them at the expense of the vocational program.
