Middle School

Unlike elementary school, where AG students work with an AG teacher outside of the general education classroom setting, the middle school AG services are delivered by the math and language arts teachers within the student's assigned class. All GCS middle schools offer advanced classes in language arts and mathematics.

After End of Grade tests each spring, students in grades 3-7 are reviewed for possible eligibility for the AG program. Additional testing may be required to determine a student's eligibility.

Criteria for Eligibility (Grades 6-8)

The following criteria must be met for eligibility to receive AG services in Reading/Language Arts and/or Math. Student progress is reviewed each year to determine if services should change or remain the same.

  • Reading Achievement: 85th percentile or greater
  • Math Achievement: 85th percentile or greater
  • Gifted Rating Scales (GRS): 3 out of 5 scales must have a t score at or above 60 points

A portfolio may be requested by a parent or classroom teacher to take the place of one eligibility criterion. A portfolio may be developed if an aptitude or achievement score is in the 80-84 percentile range.  A portfolio may be developed for the GRS if 2 out of 5 scales have a t-score at or above 60.
