Grade 2 Talent Development Pilot

Twenty-one Guilford County elementary schools, are piloting a Second Grade Talent Development program, with the support of the Academically Gifted Department.  The program is designed to develop the talents of second grade students in preparation for rigorous academics as they progress through school. 

Criteria

Schools that have low numbers of students eligible for Academically Gifted services in grades 3-5.

Selection for the pilot schools is on a voluntary basis.

Program Goal

  • Develop the academic and intellectual talents of second grade students
  • Begin Talent Development prior to third grade
  • Increase the numbers of AG students eligible in elementary schools that currently serve fewer than fifteen student
  • Create scholarly classroom environments that fully engage students in the learning process

Curriculum

Building Thinking Skills, a research-based program, develops critical thinking and analysis skills. The curriculum is formatted to build from concrete processes, to semi-concrete, and fianlly to the abstract cognitive processes.
