Northwest High Teacher Earns National Debate Award

At its May 10, 2011 meeting, the Board of Education will recognize Scott Bennett, speech and debate coach at Northwest High, for earning a national award through the National Forensic League.

Bennett, who has taught at Northwest High since 2000 and teaches civics and economics, recently was designated a 1st Diamond award winner by the National Forensic League. Diamond awards are given based on the number of students coached and their results, with each diamond representing more than 2,000 performances over five or more years.

Bennett will be recognized at the National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas on June 17. The honors organization represents more than 2,900 schools across the country.

The National Forensic League is a nonprofit society whose mission is to promote high school and middle school speech and debate activities as a means to develop a student’s essential life skills and values.
