| Guilford County Board of Education Regular Meeting April 28, 2011 | To: | Members, Board of Education | From: | Maurice O. Green, Superintendent Nora Carr, Chief of Staff | Date: | April 25, 2011 | RE: | GCS Students Shine During Battle of the Books Competition | | At its April 28, 2011 meeting, the Board of Education will recognize students from the winning Battle of the Books teams at the elementary and middle school levels. Lindley Elementary took home a first-place finish, Jones Elementary placed second and Peck Elementary placed third at the annual event, which took place on the campus of UNCG. At the middle school level, Aycock Middle took home the top prize followed by Northwest Middle and Kiser Middle in second and third, respectively. Aycock Middle advanced to the regional competition on April 8 in Caswell County and placed second overall. Overall, 55 teams representing more than 600 students competed in the GCS event, in which children face questions about the settings, plots and characters of books from a predetermined list. Elementary students were asked to read 12 books, and middle school students were responsible for 27 books. Aligning with the district’s One Million Books campaign, the competition, sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), is designed to encourage reading in the younger grades. At this time, NCSLMA does not sponsor regional competitions for elementary schools. | | | | |
