| Attached please find four options for consideration for the 2010-11 Traditional Calendar for students. The first three options were developed by the Calendar Committee, which includes parents, community members and faith community representatives as well as teachers, principals and central office employees (see attached committee roster). The fourth option was developed by staff in response to feedback from district administrators. The various options align with state law and attempt to reflect and reconcile Board, parent, educator and community concerns voiced last year (see attached calendar checklist) as much as possible. Calendars for employees and the non-traditional school calendars are based on the Traditional Calendar and will be developed once the Board has finalized the Traditional Calendar. Here’s a quick recap of the four options, with the major differences underlined. Option 1: School starts for students on Aug. 25 and ends June 9. Eight days are provided for winter break. A workday is provided for teachers on Jan. 3. Spring break would be held in March and could be used for make-up days. If more than 6 make-up days are needed, school would extend past June 10 for students. Option 2: School starts for students on Aug. 25 and ends June 9. Eight days are provided for winter break. A workday is provided for teachers on Jan. 3. Spring break would be held in April and could be used for make-up days. If more than 6 make-up days are needed, school would extend past June 10 for students. Option 3: School starts for students on Aug. 25 and ends June 7. Seven days are provided for winter break. Teachers and students both come back to school on Jan. 3 (no work day is provided). Spring break would be held in April and could be used for make-up days. If more than eight make-up days are needed, school would extend past June 10 for students. Option 4: School starts for students on Aug. 25 and ends June 10. Eight days are provided for winter break. A workday is provided for teachers on Jan. 3. Teachers would have two work days at the end of first semester instead of one. A five-day spring break would be held in March and could be used for one make-up day. If more than five make-up days are needed, school would extend past June 10 for students. RECOMMENDATION: The Board of Education accepts the four options and directs staff to post and distribute the options for public comment from Nov. 10 – Dec. 10, 2009. Attachment(s): |
