CODE OF CONDUCT

In June 2011, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 736, which enacted significant changes to the way student discipline issues are handled by local school districts. The new legislation emphasizes the importance of balancing the need to address student misbehavior with the need to ensure that students are able to progress academically and graduate on time.

The goals of the new legislation include: cutting down on suspensions and expulsions; reorganizing the statutes to be internally consistent and easy to use; adding definitions and clarifying ambiguities to avoid costly and lengthy litigations; codifying case law to make the rules easier to follow; and providing additional flexibility for school personnel.

GCS has produced a document that incorporates those changes into existing GCS policies and updates the student handbook your child received at the start of the school year.
