High Point Central Update 10-15-2012
We have exciting news about our upcoming basketball season. The November 30 varsity games against Andrews will be played at High Point University’s Millis Center. We are excited about the chance to play our rivals in this great facility. We have also moved the other home varsity basketball games to Southwest Guilford High through the first of the year.
Again, we are disappointed that the gym renovations will not be finished for the start of the basketball season. We would like to invite our students and parents to a community meeting here in the school cafeteria on Monday, October 29, at 6 p.m. District staff will answer questions about the project and talk about next steps.
If you have any questions, please call Principal Bob Christina at 819-2825. |

High Point Central Update 3-12-2012
Dear Parents,
Here is the latest news about our 2008 School Construction Bond project:
On February 3, the surety company received four bids from potential replacement contractors, and since that time, has named KMD Construction LLC as the contractor for the High Point Central construction and renovation project. Restart of work on the project will begin following a preconstruction meeting this week.
GCS staff members are continuing to impress upon the surety company the importance of completing this project in a timely manner in order to have the facility open for the start of the 2012-13 school year.
The repair of the baseball field lighting and construction of a temporary access down to the baseball field have been completed.

High Point Central Update 2-14-2012
· The baseball field lights have been repaired and are currently fully operational for the upcoming spring sports seasons. · Outdoor steps at the bank to the ball field are being designed for construction and will be handled by the Bonding Company. A contractor has been selected to do this work.
In 2008, Guilford County residents approved $457 million in school bonds to improve school facilities through 27 projects. One of those projects is a $5 construction and renovation project at High Point Central. The gym will be expanded to make room for a new concession stand and ticket booth as well as a new multi-purpose room and renovated locker rooms and offices.
In November 2011, the general contractor for the High Point Central project was removed from the project for failure to perform the contract's requirements, and its Surety (Bonding Company) has taken over responsibility for managing the project.
The Surety received four bids on Feb 3, 2012 for selection of a replacement contractor and its representative, David Tolar, is evaluating those bids. The four bids received were handpicked, have proven track records and are considered qualified by the Surety. A new contractor is expected to be selected within the next few weeks, and their work should begin immediately.
The High Point Central construction and renovation project will occur in three phases. Phase 1a is a 9,600 square foot addition to the rear of the gym that will house locker rooms, team rooms, bathrooms, wrestling room, offices and training rooms. Phase 1b is a 4,400 square foot front lobby addition that will house new spectator bathrooms, concessions stand, ticket booth and a three-level elevator.
Phases 1a and 1b are scheduled for completion in summer 2012. At that time, the PE and Athletic programs will move out of the existing gym and into the new rear addition (Phase 1a) so that Phase 2, the renovation in the existing gym, can begin. Limited use of the existing gym will be available from the time school starts on August 27, 2012, until work is substantially complete on September 30, 2012. |
