Guilford County Schools is committed to school-based participative decision making to improve student performance.  This decision making process should seek input and communication from key stakeholders within the school that is aligned with and supports the achievement of performance goals as determined by the state and by the district.

To facilitate that process, the school improvement team shall consist of the principal of the school, representatives of the assistant principals, instructional personnel, instructional support personnel and teacher assistants assigned to the school, and parents of children enrolled in the school.  Representatives of all instructional personnel shall be elected annually by their respective groups by secret ballot.  Parent representatives shall be elected by parents of children enrolled in the school via a secret ballot election conducted by the parent and teacher organization of the school, or if none exists, by the largest organization of parents formed for this purpose.  Parents representatives should reflect the racial and socio-economic composition of the students enrolled in that school and shall not be members of the building-level staff.

The school improvement team will develop a plan to improve student performance that addresses the following areas:

  • improved instruction and student outcomes;
  • professional development;
  • school climate, which includes safety and discipline and working conditions;
  • stakeholder satisfaction (students, parents, teachers), and
  • duty-free lunch/planning time for teachers.

The superintendent is instructed to develop procedures that define term limitations, specific function and responsibilities, and a timeline for elections.
