The board recognized Beth Spivey, art teacher at Pilot Elementary, as the May 2012 Employee of the Month.
GCS Volunteer of the Month for May 2012
The board recognized Lori Grubb, a volunteer at Sedalia Elementary, as the May 2012 Volunteer of the Month.
Aviation Director Wins Technology in Education Award
The board recognized Dr. Cynthia Waters, director of The Andrews Aviation Academy, as a recipient of the 2012 Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award given by the Astronauts Memorial Foundation, NASA and the Space Foundation.

Consideration of Naming of the Southeast High Media Center
After considering input from the community regarding the naming of Southeast High's media center, the board voted to approve the name "John A. Cox Media Center."
Update on Allen Jay Middle School Rock Gym
The board approved a motion in support of efforts by the Allen Jay Alumni Association to have the rock gym located at Allen Jay Middle School listed as a National Historic Place. The application is scheduled to be presented to the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee at its meeting on June 14 in Raleigh.
Parkview Elementary Priority Plan
The state has identified Parkview Elementary Expressive Arts Magnet as a Priority school, which means its 2010-2011 student achievement, as measured by the state end-of-grade tests, is among the lowest 5 percent of Title I schools in North Carolina. As a Priority school, Parkview is eligible to receive an additional $300,000 in federal funding for the 2012-13 school year.
The board approved a motion to support the plan presented by staff to implement reforms including:
- requiring all present staff members to reapply for their positions;
- extending the instructional day by 45 minutes;
- providing an additional five days of staff development for the staff;
- providing money incentives for recruitment and retention of staff;
- enhancing the magnet theme through greater integration of the arts program with core curriculum;
- improving parent involvement;
- increasing instructional technology;
- continuing the full cycle observation of staff.
Approval of Revised Traditional Calendar for 2012-13
Following a 12-day period of public comment, the board approved Option A as the 2012-13 traditional calendar. Option A provides for a vacation day on Nov. 21 and a winter break consisting of eight school days. The calendar is subject to the state's approval of a waiver request to eliminate the five extra days of classroom instruction required by the General Assembly.
Principal Selection Process
The board heard a proposal regarding changes to the principal selection process to allow more time for board members to discuss the candidates. The board approved Option A with the stipulation that the process be reevaluated in six months.
Continued 2012-13 Budget Discussion
The board approved a budget in the amount of $688.3 million, which reflects a reduction of $37,472 from the superintendent's original budget proposal. This amount is equal to four months of a principal's salary at one of two new autism wings scheduled to open in fall 2013.

Approval of Revised 2012-13 Board Meeting Schedule
The board approved a revised meeting schedule to avoid scheduling a meeting the week immediately following spring break.
Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and online at http://media.gcsnc.net/gcstv. The meetings re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
