This message was sent to staff (fyi for you):

Dear Ragsdale Faculty members,
This is Dr. Rogers with some sad news. Three of our students were involved in a car accident last evening/this morning in Myrtle Beach. Rychon Hawkings, John Bawa, and Debrien Brown were involved in a car accident. All that is known at this time is that Rychon has died as a result of injuries, Debrien is in very serious or critical condition and John is also hospitalized, condition unknown. A crisis team of counselors has been summoned to help us with tomorrow's sadness. If you teach one of these students, you may also need additional support. Please let the crisis team and Dr. Rogers know of your needs. As faculty, we know we are the grown ups, but realize that it is okay to be sad and express your emotions as well. I honor each of you for the caring you display for your students. The administration has been in contact with the families and they appreciate your love and prayers for their children.
Let us know how we can help you or your students in this time of need. The crisis team will use the media center as their homebase.
Highest regards, Dr. R

The following message is being sent via Connect Ed now:

Ragsdale High Fight – Connect-ED message – 3/22/13

Good morning, Ragsdale High families. This is Principal Kathy Rogers. When something happens that affects our school, I want to make sure to provide you with accurate information in a timely manner.

This morning, a large group of students got into a fight on campus. No one was seriously hurt. We take this very seriously and will not tolerate this kind of behavior. The students who were involved were arrested and will also face school consequences. At Ragsdale, we expect our students to uphold only the highest standards of behavior, and to treat every member of our school family with dignity and respect.

Please feel free to call me at 454-7400 with any questions. Thank you for your continued support of our school and please talk to your teenager/student about any involvement they may have had as a negative onlooker which keeps us from providing quick resolution.  Student behavior that provides additional disruption interferes in providing the safety for all students, and this negative “onlooker” behavior will also not be tolerated.

Thank you.

Principal Kathy Rogers

GCS Strategic Plan 2016

In January of 2013, GCS Superintendent Maurice "Mo" Green launched the Strategic Plan 2016, Achieving Educational Excellence: Personalizing Learning. The superintendent laid out the plan during the fourth annual State of Our Schools event, held on January 31, 2013, at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro. The Strategic Plan 2012 laid the foundation for the district's success, and the new plan will build upon it. The new plan is called Achieving Educational Excellence: Personalizing Learning and includes four areas:

Area I: Personalized Learning

Area II: Character, Service and Safety

Area III: Parent, Family and Community

Area IV: Educator and Organizational Excellence

Safety News:

1. Today, all members of Ragsdale High School participated in a lockdown drill . Much like a fire drill, this routine drill helps our faculty and students to practice for an emergency situation. The safety of your children and loved ones is a primary concern to us. At the beginning of each school year, all teachers are well trained on how to handle a situation which results in a lock down of the school. Teachers and administrators practiced this drill with the students today, so that the students understand the procedures and can readily go into lockdown mode in case a real lockdown situation should ever arise.

2. Parents, remember to pick up and drop off your students from the inner lane on the circle. Please do not stop or park on student crosswalks and be sure to be on the lookout for students who aren't paying attention. Please do not enter the parking lots to pick up or drop off students. We are having a lot of trouble in the Yellow Lot beside the softball field with cars parking waiting to pick up students. Please get in the pickup lane.

3. Please remind your student that they should keep their voice lowered in the building and keep their hands off all others. There is a lot of horseplaying and silliness that must stop immediately.

4. Tell your student to AVOID all disturbances. School is not the place for "immature, disruptive and/or selfish" behavior.

5. Social media has caused many hurt feelings and worse among teenagers. Please talk about the serious danger of cyber bullying and harassment.

6. While driving on High Point Road last weekend, I saw several students texting and driving and not paying attention to their driving. I know you constantly remind your teen about this.

7. Posted on our webpage is a link on Tips to Talk with students about the recent Connecticut school tragedy. There is some very helpful information on this link.

8. Don't forget - if you have a safety concern, email me at rogersk@gcsnc.com. We are working on more lighting on the student sidewalk and getting all our cameras up and working in tip top shape.

Many thanks,

K. Rogers, Principal
