Autistic Unit
Our department is made up of twelve classes and serves children ages three to twenty-two whose needs are best met in a highly structured environment. Staff members have access to training and collaboration through division TEACCH, a program developed at UNC-CH, which incorporates a method known as "structured teaching." We use applied behavioral analysis, Picture Exchange Communication System, and behavioral management strategies. Therapists collaborate with classroom teachers as directed by IEP objectives.
A strong emphasis is placed on teaching communication skills, as indicated by each student's interests and ability. When students reach 14 years old, they are eligible for Gateway's vocational education program. Teachers of autistic classes frequently collaborate with parents, therapists, and other teachers to best meet the educational, behavioral, and communication needs of their students. Community and social skills needs are met in a variety of ways, such as field trips to resturants and community events, and celebrating Autism Awareness month by a structured field day with students from other schools. Interns from local high schools and universities lend a hand and enable students to benefit from increased individual teaching time. Our competent and caring staffteach communication, educational, vocational, and self help skills in a stimulating environment. We are aware of the extraordinary privilege given to us every day as our students invite us to enter their world and discover the many treasures found there.
