No task is too small for Deborah Woods. This Erwin Montessori volunteer uses her talents in various ways. Whether she is working in a classroom or the cafeteria, she never stops.

“She works faithfully in the cafeteria aiding students and teachers,” said Teacher Karen Wallace. “You will see her opening milk cartons, giving students plastic flatware to eat with, wiping the cafeteria tables, cleaning spills and often receiving hugs from students.”

Woods is a major force at Erwin. She relentlessly works with student reading groups enabling students to exceed the required state reading goals. “Her support and willingness to be available three days a week has enabled my students to learn the joys of reading,” said Wallace.

Her hours of volunteering do not stop there; she even assisted teachers with activities supporting Earth Day. “During Earth Day, Deborah, along with the students, cleaned the garden beds of weeds,” said Wallace. “She even donated the soil and flowers for us plant.” In honor of her selfless giving and loving spirit, Deborah Woods is the GCS Volunteer of the Month. “She is an example for others to follow, said Wallace. She donates her time and expects nothing in return. She is phenomenal!”

As Volunteer of the Month, American Express officials surprised Woods with a gift bag and $25 gift card. In addition, the Board of Education will recognize Wallace at its June 10 meeting. Woods’ photo will hang at Erwin Montessori, as well as the district’s central offices.
