MWBE participation remains an important goal for the district

At the Board of Education meeting Thursday, several contractors expressed concern about the employment status of the district's Minority Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) coordinator and expressed concern about the district's commitment to this program. In response, GCS issues the following statement:

"GCS remains deeply committed to furthering the involvement of minority and women-owned businesses in school construction and renovations as well as other services and operational areas. Expanding MWBE participation is an important goal in the district's strategic plan and a key district initiative.

"Todd Baldwin, GCS' MWBE coordinator, was suspended with pay on Dec. 1, 2009. As school personnel matters are confidential by law in North Carolina, GCS will not comment further on this matter.

"John Mann, purchasing officer, has assumed Mr. Baldwin's duties on an interim basis. Contractors with questions regarding bids or MWBE participation are encouraged to contact Mr. Mann at 336-370-3238 or mannj@gcsnc.com."
