Three Guilford County Schools (GCS) students are recipients of
prestigious National Merit $2,500 Scholarships. The students are among
about 2,500 high school seniors from around the country selected based
on their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous
college studies.
More than 1.5 million students entered the 2010 National
Merit Scholarship competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high
school juniors. In September 2009, 16,000 of the highest scorers were
named semifinalists and about 15,000 advanced to the finalist level.
Scholarship winners were selected from this group of outstanding
students.
The recipients of the $2,500 scholarships join
students who have already been selected for corporate-sponsored National
Merit awards. Additional students will be selected for
college-sponsored scholarships during the summer. By the conclusion of
the 2010 competition, about 8,400 finalists will be selected to receive
National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $36 million.
