GCS Students Complete Science and Technology Enrichment Program

The Department of Chemistry at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University hosted 18 Guilford County Schools (GCS) students this summer for the Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP).
STEP is a six-week program that provides students with a "minds-on" and "hands-on" experience in a variety of science-based subjects, including Analytical, Organic, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Mathematics. The program also includes year-round services such as monthly tutorials, mentoring and opportunities to participate in science related research seminars.
The students, who had to undergo a rigorous application process to participate, received $1,000 each at the end of the program. Two students, Naijla Faizi from Andrews High and Akshit Patel from Smith High, were chosen as the 2009 STEP Scholars. They will receive an additional stipend of $2,000, complete a research project at A&T and present their research findings in a regional and/or national scientific meeting in spring 2010. Other awards given were:
• Best oral presentation: Britney McCollum and Whitney McCollum, both from Smith
• Best written research report: Judy Sisouvong from Smith and Joscelyne Mason from Dudley High
• Best poster: Naijla Faizi from Andrews and Kevin Littlejohn from Dudley
The STEP program is funded through a grant from the Burroughs-Welcome Fund’s Student Science Enrichment Program (SSEP) and from Greensboro Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program.
