Students Shine During Academic All-Star Camp
| Thursday, July 26th, 2012 |
For 135 students, the month of July provided educational opportunities that included exposure to subject-related interests, ACT preparation and leadership skills as part of the three-week Guilford County Schools (GCS) Academic All-Star Camp.
High-achieving students from each of the district’s middle schools were selected to attend Academic All-Star Camp based on their End-of-Grade test scores. GCS hosts the camp annually with the support of Businesses for Excellence in Education and university partners.
Each student concentrated on one of four curriculum areas – English language arts, math, science or social studies. Teachers used project-based learning with students, working both individually and in small groups, and counselors provided leadership activities that included games and competitions.
Academic All-Star Camp also provided the young students with a taste of college. Students visited North Carolina A&T State University, checking out the library, recreation facilities and classroom buildings. They were able to ask questions about college life and learn about opportunities like study abroad and service-learning. The camp concluded with a closing ceremony when each team highlights their experience and shares images captured during the three-week adventure. |
