Governor, State Sup. Recognize GCS Graduation Rates

Ten Guilford County Schools (GCS) high schools received state recognition today for their high graduation rates. Eight schools achieved 100 percent graduation rates for the 2010-11 school year and two more schools were among the highest in the state based on their size. 
 

Gov. Bev Perdue visited with Weaver Academy students and faculty to congratulate them on earning a 100 percent graduation rate for the fourth year in a row. The governor met the school's counseling staff and observed theater and construction classes. The magnet school houses both a full-time academy of performing and visual arts and part-time Career and Technical Education programs.

State Superintendent June Atkinson recognized the schools with the highest graduation rates in the state at a luncheon in Durham. The Early College at Guilford, Greensboro College Middle College, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, The Middle College at Bennett, The Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro, The Middle College at GTCC-Jamestown, The Middle College at GTCC-High Point and Weaver Academy were recognized along with 15 other schools from across the state for graduating 100 percent of students in four years.

Northwest High and Southwest High also had some of the highest graduation rates in the state based on their size. Northwest, with a graduation rate of 94.5 percent, was one of the top two schools in the state with a ninth-grade cohort of 400-499. Southwest, which had a graduation rate of 92.7 percent, was one of the highest in the 300-399 cohort size.

 

Overall, the 2010-11 graduation rate for GCS increased to 83.1 percent, up 2.4 percentage points from 2009-10.
