Principals and staff will gather in the Cone Ballroom at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Elliott Center, where they will be recognized for their successful implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) systems and practices.

A professional development session will begin today at 11:30 a.m., followed by recognitions from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Seventeen schools received the Green Ribbon, which awards schools that have successfully designed and implemented systems and practices that support appropriate behavior in all students. Another 23 schools will be recognized for achieving the Model Level, which incorporates PBIS for all students as well as additional supports for smaller groups of students.

PBIS focuses on using best evidence-based behavioral and academic practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students. A total of 57 schools in Guilford County Schools have implemented at least one phase of PBIS, and according to PBIS Coordinator Sherry Rogowski, it's making a difference.

"One of the trends we've noticed is that the majority of PBIS schools continue to show a decrease of office discipline referrals," she said.

The following schools achieved Green Ribbon: Archer Elementary, Brightwood Elementary, Eastern High, Ferndale Middle, Gillespie Park Elementary, Joyner Elementary, Kirkman Park Elementary, McLeansville Elementary, Nathanael Greene Elementary, Northwest High, Northwest Middle, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, Pleasant Garden Elementary, SCALE - Greensboro, Sedalia Elementary, Sedgefield Elementary and Smith High.
