Recognitions
Teacher Receives President's Volunteer Service Award
The board recognized Rita Cockman, a teacher's assistant at Frazier Elementary, as a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award.
Recognition of Fall Sports State Champions
The board recognized student-athletes from the state champion teams of Northern High (football), Page High (football), Grimsley High (women's tennis) as well as women's tennis individual state champions from Grimsley High (doubles) and Page High (singles).
National School Board Appreciation Month
Students from several schools had a special presentation for board members and presented each board member with a special book and plaque in appreciation for their hard work, courage and dedication they give to all students of Guilford County Schools.

Personnel Action Report
Staff Reports
Award of Contract for Retread Tires
The board voted to award the contract for retread tires to Snider Tire Company. The bid includes a contract duration period through December 31, 2012, with the option to extend the contract for four additional one-year periods.
Career and Technical Education Update
Barbara Zwadyk, chief curriculum and organizational development officer, and Bob Gantt, director of college tech prep/career and technical education, provided the board with an update on the status of the program.
Update on Shadybrook Road Property
Andy LaRowe, chief operations officer, presented information pertaining vacant property owned by Guilford County Schools located at 301 and 305 Shadybrook Road in High Point. The board voted to give staff authority to discuss land possibilities with the City of High Point.
Approval of Proposed 2012-13 Non-Traditional Calendars
The board approved the non-traditional calendars for Brooks Global Studies, Johnson Street Global Studies, Washington Montessori, Hampton Elementary University Partnership, Greensboro College Middle College, The Middle College at UNCG, The Early College at Guilford, the Middle Colleges and Academies, Oak Hill Elementary and Wiley Elementary. The board also voted to approve calendar waivers for the extended-year schools and the 12-month employee calendar.
Construction Update

construction projects
, which includes:

At Ragsdale High, the contractor continues installation of the ceiling grid in the dining area and assemblage of the walk-in cooler and freezer in the kitchen. Roof replacement over the administrative area is underway. In the Link Building, the contractor continues to install concrete footings and masonry walls.

At Southeast High, construction is 95 percent complete. Staff and students are occupying the new gymnasium addition and the contractor has begun work on the punch list. For the administration addition, the contractor has begun erection of office partition walls and mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins continue.

At Southwest High, construction is 99 percent complete. Renovations continue in the media center.

At Allen Middle, construction is 99 percent complete. The addition is currently being occupied by staff and students, and the contractor is addressing the punch list.

At McNair Elementary, steel erection, roof decking and masonry wall installation continues in several areas. Curb and gutter has been installed for the bus drive.
Reports from the Chairman
The board approved two board members to attend the National School Boards Association conference held in Boston this April pending funding.
