The votes are in, and the future students of Ronald E. McNair Elementary have made their choice. The new school, which will welcome 510 students this fall, will have a wolf as its mascot.
The mascot was chosen through a democratic process that involved the incoming students from Jesse Wharton Elementary, Brightwood Elementary and Northern Elementary. Those students submitted nominations for their favorite mascot, which were then narrowed down to the top three choices - eagles, rockets and wolves. The students voted on the date of the primary election, May 8, and wolves came out on top.
"It's great to see the students getting excited about their new school and forming connections even before the building is complete," said Principal George Boschini, formerly principal at General Greene Elementary. "Choosing the mascot is just one step in the process of establishing a school community," he said, adding that staff will provide input on school colors.
Students and parents will have an opportunity to meet Boschini and other staff members on Tuesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Northern Region office, 2500 Lee's Chapel Road. At that event, families will see photos of construction progress, hear about school programs and ask any questions they may have.
Ronald E. McNair Elementary will be located at 4603 Yanceyville Road in Brown Summit. The project was included in the 2008 School Bonds package. For more information, contact Boschini at 375-2621.
