Communications Coordinator Lillian Govus was surprised yesterday with the news that she had been honored for her skill in sharing the GCS story.

Thanks to Cone Health Foundation, all schools in Guilford County Schools (GCS) have an opportunity to apply for a grant that can be used toward planning health-related educational opportunities for parents and families.

GCS is offering 10 grants worth $1,000 each. The money can be used to fund workshops or a series of workshops that focus on health and wellbeing and target low-income families. Workshops targeting "winnable" battles identified recently by the Centers for Disease Control-nutrition, physical activity and obesity; teen pregnancy; HIV; motor vehicle injuries and tobacco use-are preferred. Even though health should be the focus, workshops can include other topics as well.

The workshops will be included in Guilford Parent Academy's calendar of events for the 2012-13 school year.

This is the second year Cone Health Foundation has funded this opportunity for GCS. Last year, the grants were open to Title I schools only. This year, all schools in GCS are eligible to apply.

"We are excited to once again partner with Cone Health Foundation to provide this opportunity for schools," said Lisa Gardner, coordinator for Guilford Parent Academy and community partnerships. "We are especially excited that all schools are eligible to apply. Providing parents with information on health-related topics is one way we can empower them to become full partners in their children's education."

To view the grant application, visit http://gcsnc.com/parentacademy/grants. Applications are due on July 19, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. For more information, schools should call the Parent Academy office at 336-279-4924 or e-mail parentacademy@gcsnc.com.

Cone Health Foundation is a supporting organization to Cone Health.

Western Region Executive Director Dr. Sandra Culmer was appointed to the 2012 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.

As an examiner, Culmer is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the prestigious honor. The board is composed of approximately 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and healthcare organizations, and nonprofits, including government.

Those selected meet the highest standards of qualification and peer recognition. All members of the board must take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.

Culmer joined Guilford County Schools in 2004 when she served as the principal of General Greene Elementary before moving into an administrative role. Before GCS, Culmer served as a teacher and administrator with Fairfax County Public Schools.

The Baldrige Award may be given annually in six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, healthcare and nonprofit.

The deadline for bus transportation requests for the 2012-13 school year is fast approaching. Parents and guardians of Guilford County Schools (GCS) students should submit transportation request forms by Monday, July 2 to ensure a bus assignment for their students on the first day of school.

Students do not need to submit a request form if they rode the bus last year, have the same address and are attending the same school. Students are required to submit a request form if they did not ride the bus last year, are attending a different school or if they rode the bus but there has been a change in the address where they would be picked up in the morning or dropped off in the afternoon.

The transportation request form is available at http://www.gcsnc.com/dept/trans . Completed forms should be returned to the GCS Transportation Department, 131 Franklin Blvd., Greensboro, NC, 27401. The forms can be faxed to 336-370-8932.

More than half of the district’s students – or about 40,000 elementary, middle and high school students – are transported on school buses daily.
