Guilford County Schools wants to make sure all our students are receiving the best education possible. In order to evaluate this, most students take exams at the end of the school year.

This year, all middle school students will take the traditional End-of-Grade, or EOG, tests in reading and math. Eighth- graders will also take a science EOG.

· Our EOGs will take place the week of May 20th for 8th Grade Science and the week of May 28th for reading and math.

· Eighth-graders who take Algebra I will also take an End-of-Course test on June 4, 2013

Some students will also take Common Exams, which measure a student’s knowledge in courses that are not covered by EOGs. Students may take a Common Exam in science, social studies, or both.

· Our Common Exams will take place Wednesday, May 1, 2013 for 8th Grade Social Studies.

In middle school, the Common Exams will count as one test toward a student’s final grade. The state will also look at the scores to help measure how effective our teachers are, so all students should do their best.

Here are a few things you can do to help your child succeed on the EOGs, EOCs and Common Exams:

  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep before the test.
  • Provide your child with a nutritious breakfast before the test.
  • Minimize outside activities during the week of testing. This will help reduce stress at home.
  • Set your alarm a little early each morning and make your time together at home pleasant and encouraging.
  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time.
  • Give your child a hug and let them know you have confidence in them!

Please call us at 336-294-7640 if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Greetings to High School Ahead Academy 2013-2014 Students:

Our students have an exciting opportunity this summer! We will hold a one-day boot camp so students can learn more about the tablets that are part of the Personalized Achievement, Curriculum and Environment (PACE) project.

The project is part of a $35.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and will provide tablet computers for each student in our school. The tablets will be pre-loaded with all of the lessons and assignments for their classes, as well as research tools and secure Internet access.

During our Student Boot Camp, students will learn how to use and care for the tablet, rules for using the tablet, and more.

Our school’s boot camp is scheduled for: Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please make every effort to ensure your child will attend. Students who cannot attend the boot camp will still receive a tablet, but may need extra time to learn how to use it.

We will provide lunch and GCS will provide transportation to and from the camp for all students who need it.

We will give you the letter and transportation request at our June 11th registration meeting at High School Ahead Academy from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the cafeteria. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE TRANSPORTATION-REQUEST FORM FOR YOUR CHILD TO RECEIVE TRANSPORTATION.

If you have additional questions, please call me at 336-294-7640.
