Guilford County Schools is committed to the safety and security of our school campuses, office buildings and other facilities.

To support this commitment, GCS urges all students, employees, parents and community members to be familiar with our prevention, preparedness, response and recovery procedures.

We ask that you know the plan and make sure your children, classmates and coworkers do too. Everyone plays a key role in our preparation and emergency response.

In light of the tragedy in Connecticut, GCS has asked all school administrators to take the following steps:

  • Maintain a heightened awareness regarding safety and security, and to review their school safety and security plans and procedures with their faculty and staff members, as well as with their leadership teams.

  • Review and tighten their entrance and visitor sign-in procedures with their front office personnel, and to remind all staff to report concerns immediately.

  • Complete a  lockdown drill by winter break, if they have not done so previously. Schools are required to practice these drills at least once per semester.

  • Review violence risk threat assessment protocols with school-level crisis team members.

  • Communicate what they are doing to ensure student safety with parents, and provide tips for discussing the national tragedy with children to parents and staff members.

  • Contact the GCS Safety Office for assistance in conducting a threat assessment at their schools.

  • Submit work orders regarding doors that don't lock, broken lights, and other potential safety concerns to maintenance.

  • Remind students about the importance of reporting any concerns to a trusted adult, including their parents, school officials, and the anonymous Crime Stoppers phone lines and/or text addresses.

  • Continue focus on building positive school climates and trusting relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
