My name is Cynthia Parks and I am the counselor for the class of 2015. I attended high school at Punahou High School in Honolul, Hawaii and graduated with the class of 1987. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and my Master of Education degree in Counseling from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. This is my fifth year at Southern Guilford High School. Previously I worked at Andrews High School and before that I worked at Allen Jay Elementary, Archer, and Shadybrook. I am a big supporter of the arts and currently play the trumpet with the Greensboro Concert Band. I am also an avid equestrian and have three horses and one foal due in May.

Opportunities for 10th graders:
North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) The NCSSM is a public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors. NCSSM offers students the opportunity to live in a community with others of similar intellect, interests, and aspirations. The school currenty enrolls approximately 680 juniors and seniors representing all thirteen congressional districs in the state of NC.
Criteria used to select students: * Interest in science/mathematics/technology as demonstrated by participation in clubs, compeitions, supplemental programs, and other related activities. * Leadership positions held * Above average grades in freshman and sophomore classes * Enrollment in accelerated and challenging courses * Teacher and Guidance Counselor evaluations * Scores from the SAT (must be taken in October, November, December or January of the sophomore year) * A NCSSM math test

Career Day
On Wednesday, November 14th we will be holding our annual SGHS Career Day from 9:30 – 12:00. We are always looking for parents who are willing to speak to the students about their career. Career speakers will be set up in the gym and students will be given time to meet the speakers and ask questions about what they do in their job. If you are interested in being a career speaker, please let me know as soon as possible by emailing me at parksc@gcsnc.com .
Saturday School
1st Semester: Procedures: Students need to sign-up in the front office by the Thursday before the Saturday School. Once the sheet is full, no more students will be allowed to sign up. Students need to report to the Media Center by 8:30. Any student not in the Media Center by 8:30 will be denied access to Saturday School. Only the doors to the front of the school will be open- the doors at the end of the commons area near the cafeteria will remain locked on Saturdays. All students are expected to remain at Saturday School until they are released at 12:00. All non-driving students should have a ride here at that time.
