Be the Change - Community Profiles

| Kim Mathai Kim
Mathai, also known as the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) powerhouse
of GCS, grew Penn-Griffin’s PTA membership from two to 200. Her
dedication and support of the vital relationship between a school and
the PTA is what sets Mathai apart from the rest. GCS appreciates her
energy towards taking on the tasks that teachers and staff need help to
complete. |
| Jason McMasters Guilford
County Schools has a friend in Jason McMasters; he donated a new
concrete patio to use for adaptive physical education classes. As the
district faced budget cuts, McMasters stepped forward to donate his
time and organize the repaving of the concrete patio, which had been in
disrepair for some time. The concrete was worn and cracked, making it
difficult for teachers to take students with disabilities outside for
physical therapy and practice using wheelchairs H.J. McMasters and
Associates, along with several other area businesses, donated labor and
supplies free of charge to the district for the complete replacement of
the patio. McMasters did not let the fact that he was not a teacher or
school official keep him from action, he identified the problem and
became the solution. |
| Carl Serrette Carl
Serette, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) President of Jamestown
Elementary, is the prototype of a perfect parent in a school. Also
serving as a member of the State PTA, Serette began an organization
known as Men Organized to Raise Engagement (M.O.R.E), which encourages
African American fathers to get involved in schools. His service does
not stop there; he is also a member of the District Parent Advisory
Board. Always striving for excellence, Serette is a huge part of GCS,
and his attitude of service is comparable to none. |
