Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please visit our What's New page!  It will keep you informed of our monthly activities.

My name is Jennifer Vocke and I am thrilled to be part of the Bison’s Life Skills class.  I am a graduate from High Point University in the area of Special Education.  I have a dual licensure in the areas of learning disabilities and mental disabilities adaptive curriculm.

I began my career as Life Skills teacher at Johnson Street Global Studies.  After 5 years at Johnson Street, I worked as a Learning Disabilities resource teacher at Hampton Academy.  In 2006, I was promoted to a Central Office position as an Exceptional Children’s Program Administrator.  I enjoyed working with Central Office and acquired a great deal of knowledge, but my heart is with the students. Teaching is my passion and I knew I wanted to do it again. So, that landed me right here at High Point Central.  I have been at Central for over 3 years.  I was recently promoted to be the Exceptional Children's Chairperson at our school.

I come with great enthusiasm and determination to make your child’s high school experience the best it can be.  I run a very structured, routine based classroom that aligns with the NC Extended Content Standards.  We work daily on functional academic skills. We have implemented a reward work system in our classroom that is based on individual goals, vocational, and transition goals.  We have several life skill stations such as custodial, grocery, money skills, reading, fine motor, and office skills.   And of course, we have leisure stations, so we can enjoy our hobbies.

We put a major focus in the classroom on essential life skills that will help your child be successful at home, in the community, and the work place.  Each student has a school based job to work on vocational skills. One of our yearly goals is to travel on a weekly basis to community work sites.  At these sites, we can work on mastering job skills, community life skills, and appropriate interactions with the public. I want to give your child positive experiences in the classroom, school, and surrounding community to help them become upstanding functional citizens.   I will give them every opportunity to do their very best in all areas of our program.

We also look forward to many sport and fitness related opportunities with your student each year.  We participate in school based activities such as Physical Education and track events. We also participate in Horse Power, a local therapeutic riding center.  One of the favorites among our students is Special Olympics.  We compete in all local events, bowling, swimming, and track and field.  Let me tell you, we rock the house!

I will be updating our website monthly to keep you informed of our classroom and work site activities.  Please check the What's New section of my website.  If requested, I will do a communication notebook with you on a daily basis.

My teaching philosophy is simple, that every student is capable, that we must seek out and give every opportunity to help them be the best that they can be, always being respectful and compassionate in doing so.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me at any time.  I also invite you during the year to visit us in the classroom or at our job sites.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Vocke
