Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to Ben L. Smith High School, Home of the Mighty Golden Eagle. My name is Mr. Watkins and it will be a pleasure teaching your child this semester. Whether your family is new to Smith High or are returning to Smith High, we are excited to be able to serve you and your child.

I have planned an exciting set of activities to aid your child in becoming a master of the math curriculum. Listed below are the units that we will be exploring this semester in Math Tech 1. The curriculum is extremely rigorous so I will be calling on you to aid me in this journey with your child. I believe in parent involvement and am looking forward to working with you this year.

Unit 1 ~ Matrices    Test/Projects ~ 50 %

Unit 2 ~ Solving Equations  Quizzes ~ 25 %

Unit 3 ~ Solving Inequalities HW/CW ~25%

Unit 4 ~ Ratio and Proportion

Unit 5 ~ Functions

Unit 6 ~ Linear Equations

Unit 10 ~ Factoring Polynomials

Unit 11 ~ Non- Linear Functions

General Rules

  • All students MUST bring all necessary materials to class EVERY day.
  • Show all work, not just the answer.
  • Come in class and begin the warm up for that day.
  • Have homework ready to turn in at the beginning of class.
  • Head up and alert at all times.

**Homework assignments are expected to be turned in the following day to be graded. Late homework will not be accepted.

**You are expected to show work on ALL assignments, including tests. Failure to show work will result in a grade of zero. NO WORK NO CREDIT!! NWNC = 0

**Students who do not receive an 81/C mastery on Unit Tests will have the opportunity to Retest after school.

**All students are required to pass the Algebra 1 EOC with a level 3 or 4 in order to pass the class and graduate from high school.

Teaching children to walk the path of Excellency is my goal and with this in mind here are some of the things your child will need to be successful in math this year:

· His/Her Willingness to Learn, Try, and Achieve Greatness

· Your Support

· 3 – Ring Binder (At least 1”)

· A Constant Supply of Paper

· An Abundant Amount of Pencils

· A Scientific Calculator ($10 - $15)

If you ever have any questions about your child’s progress, please feel free to call me at 294-7300 or by email at watkint2@gcsnc.com. Please remember that early intervention is the best approach. I encourage you to send your child to tutorial so they can continue to “Walk The Path of Excellency!” because “Higher Expectations = Higher Achievements”.

Once again, I look forward to working with you and your child as we take this journey together. HAVE A GREAT SEMESTER AND HAVE FUN!

Sincerely,

Mr. Watkins
